NCAAF Week 1 Friday Picks: Best Bets for Miami (FL) vs Stanford & Fresno State vs USC

NCAAF Week 1 Friday Picks

Friday’s Week 1 board features ranked favorites in California. No. 7 Miami visits Stanford for an ACC opener, then No. 14 USC hosts Fresno State in the Bulldogs’ first game as a Pac-12 member. Both contests kick off at 9:00 PM ET, giving bettors a direct choice between laying large numbers and taking underdogs with three-touchdown cushions.

Miami is favored by 25 points with a total of 46.5. USC is laying 21.5, and its total sits at 51. The favorites should win, but only one offers the cleaner spread case. Our college football Week 1 odds report explains why the number matters as much as the team.

Miami vs Stanford Pick

Miami enters its opener after finishing 13-3 and losing 27-21 to Indiana in the national championship game. Mario Cristobal added Duke transfer Darian Mensah, the ACC preseason player of the year. Mensah threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns in 2025. Mark Fletcher Jr. returns after rushing for 1,192 yards and 12 scores, and Malachi Toney gives the new quarterback a proven target. The official ACC preview confirms Miami as the conference’s preseason favorite.

Stanford has one useful advantage: game experience. The Cardinal beat Hawaii 37-27 in Tavita Pritchard’s head-coaching debut. Michigan transfer Davis Warren completed 22 of 34 passes for 310 yards, one touchdown and no turnovers. Micah Ford rushed for 99 yards and three scores, helping Stanford produce 483 yards without a giveaway.

The concern sits on defense. Hawaii erased much of an early deficit, and Miami has superior speed across the formation. Stanford may move the ball enough to threaten the over, but keeping Mensah, Fletcher and Toney below 40 points is a much harder task. Miami beat the Cardinal 42-7 last season after the score was tied at halftime.

Miami’s new quarterback adds uncertainty, yet his prior production reduces the normal Week 1 adjustment. The Hurricanes should create separation once their defensive front forces Warren into longer passing situations.

NCAAF Best Bet: Miami -25 (-110)

Score Prediction: Miami 41, Stanford 14

Fresno State vs USC Pick

USC has already played, beating San Jose State 42-26 on August 29. Jayden Maiava passed for 286 yards, Trent Mosley recorded 118 receiving yards, and King Miller led the Trojans with 63 rushing yards. That opening performance showed USC’s scoring ceiling, but allowing 26 points created doubts about laying more than three touchdowns.

Fresno State starts its second season under Matt Entz, who went 9-4 in his first year. Entz previously worked on Lincoln Riley’s USC staff, so he brings familiarity with the Trojans’ terminology and practice habits. Quarterback E.J. Warner returns after leading Fresno State with 2,030 passing yards in 2025. Rayshon Luke rushed for 702 yards, and Josiah Freeman posted 642 receiving yards.

The USC game preview notes that the Trojans are 4-1 in the official series record and won the 2022 meeting 45-17. USC should score often again, but Fresno State has a veteran quarterback and enough offensive continuity to reach the high teens.

A 21.5-point cushion matters when USC’s defense has already allowed four touchdowns. Fresno State can lose comfortably and cash. The Bulldogs’ secondary should create enough resistance to prevent a full runaway.

NCAAF Best Bet: Fresno State +21.5 (-110)

Score Prediction: USC 38, Fresno State 20

Total Market Read

Miami-Stanford over 46.5 is the better total angle. Stanford’s Week 0 offense showed enough balance to contribute, and Miami can threaten the number largely by itself. Fresno State-USC over 51 needs the Bulldogs to score near 20, a reasonable target with Warner back, but USC may slow the fourth quarter after building a lead. The side markets offer cleaner protection. Bettors should avoid pairing both favorites with both overs, since one defensive improvement could sink an otherwise solid card.

Best Friday Betting Card

Fresno State +21.5 is the strongest wager. USC owns the larger talent advantage, but its Week 0 defense and Fresno State’s returning production make the spread expensive. Miami -25 is the secondary play, supported by Mensah’s experience and Stanford’s shaky second half against Hawaii.

The two favorites should move to 1-0 and 2-0, respectively. The betting value splits: back Miami’s margin, then take the points with Fresno State.

NCAAF Top Pick: Fresno State +21.5 (-110)

Secondary Pick: Miami -25 (-110)
